In a 4K/6K digital era where every pixel is examined at 100%, most lenses chase extreme sharpness and cleanliness, often sacrificing mood and storytelling. The MicroPrime 50mm T1.4 takes a very different path. It is not a “flawless instrument,” but a cinema lens with soul, emotion, and character.

Beautiful bokeh and portrait atmosphere

The MicroPrime 50mm T1.4 uses a 13-blade circular aperture, delivering exceptionally round and natural out-of-focus rendering. Whether wide open or slightly stopped down, bokeh highlights remain beautifully circular without harsh polygonal edges.

The gentle transition from focus to defocus creates a smooth connection between subject and background, without “cut-out” or harsh separation, giving your characters true cinematic dimensionality. The ultra-fast T1.4 aperture makes it easy to separate subject from background in night scenes, bars, street lights, wedding venues, and more, producing dreamy, poetic background blur. From music videos and short films to wedding videos and drama shorts, it gives your subject “breathing room,” naturally drawing the viewer’s eyes to facial expressions and emotion.

Vintage cinematic optical character

At the heart of the SLR Magic MicroPrime 50mm T1.4 is its strong “vintage look,” intentionally preserving an old-film-like softness and romance. Wide open at T1.4, the image center has a subtle glowing softness; highlights gently bloom and contours are smooth rather than harsh. This naturally smooths small skin imperfections, pores, and fine lines, reducing the need for heavy post-processing. Bright areas carry a slight misty feel, while shadows still retain detail, filling the frame with a classic film atmosphere: perfect for emotional storytelling, romance films, and art-house style work.

At T1.4 you’ll also see a hint of vignetting, acting like a natural “visual frame” that reinforces emotional tension at the center of the image - a common language in cinema. Once you stop down to T2.0–T2.8, center sharpness increases significantly; details become crisp and clean, yet edge transitions remain gentle, avoiding the harsh, “razor-sharp digital” look. This is the most practical working aperture range for portraits, interviews, and narrative work: the “sweet spot” many creators live in. From T4 onward, overall sharpness and contrast become closer to modern lenses, easily meeting the demands of projects that require a clean image.

Though it has a vintage soul, its optical design is optimized for the 4K era. At 4K resolution and stopped down, it still delivers clear detail, stable lines, and excellent geometric distortion control, keeping straight lines straight. In the T2–T4 range, it satisfies professional resolution requirements while preserving the gentle tonality expected from a cine lens.

Warm, filmic, made for color grading

The MicroPrime 50mm T1.4’s color rendering is designed for cinema and color grading. Overall tonality leans warm, with a sense of story and human warmth. Contrast is moderate: shadows aren’t overly crushed, and highlights don’t blow out to pure white. Colors are slightly muted and lines are drawn softly, evoking a film-like texture that tames the “overly sharp, hard, digital” feel of modern sensors, while leaving ample room for color work in post. For creators who rely on LUTs, DaVinci Resolve, or Premiere for fine color grading, this lens provides an ideal “starting negative.”

Dramatic flare and bloom

Among lenses in its class, what independent filmmakers and music video directors talk about most with the SLR Magic MicroPrime 50mm T1.4 is its unique flare and bloom. When strong light sources (street lamps, car headlights, backlit sun, stage lights) enter the frame, the lens produces circular, ring-shaped dramatic flares, while highlights develop pronounced blooming halos. This makes it easy to create romantic, dreamy, or even slightly rock-and-roll visual effects.

In direct contrast to modern lenses that try to suppress flare and maximize contrast, the SLR Magic MicroPrime 50mm T1.4 embraces organic optical “imperfections” and turns them into visual character and emotional language.

A controllable creative tool with one lens, two worlds

The charm of the SLR Magic MicroPrime 50mm T1.4 lies in being a “controllable” style lens. When you need a clean, modern, commercial look, simply attach a matte box or lens hood to control side light and flare, and stop down to around T2.8–T4.0. Contrast and sharpness increase, and the image becomes clean and precise, closer to a modern lens character: ideal for corporate interviews, commercials, and documentaries.

When you want more mood, atmosphere, and story, just remove the hood, let sunlight, neon signs, and street lights pour directly into the lens, and open up to T1.4–T2.0. This fully unleashes its glowing softness, bloomed flares, and vintage color, as if you’ve instantly applied a unique “cinema filter” to your footage.

One lens that can capture both clean, rational modern images and emotionally charged, dramatic visuals makes it an ideal first choice for budget-conscious creators who still demand cinematic images. It takes your work beyond just being “high definition” and makes it truly moving.

As a true CINE lens, the MicroPrime CINE series is engineered from the ground up to meet professional motion‑picture standards in both mechanics and handling. Its lightweight body combines cinema‑grade control with portability: internally it’s constructed like a professional cine lens, but the exterior remains compact enough for mirrorless bodies and gimbals. A 50mm focal length with a T1.4 aperture, without a massive body - especially friendly for solo operators.

Across the MicroPrime CINE lineup, weight, physical dimensions, front diameter, and gear ring positions are highly unified. Swapping between focal lengths on a gimbal usually requires little to no rebalancing, saving significant time and effort on set. The standardized 85mm front diameter is compatible with most cinema matte boxes, while the internal 82mm filter thread accepts ND, Black Mist, Pro‑Mist, and other creative filters for fast adaptation to lighting and mood.

The focus throw is a generous 150 degrees, providing smooth, precise manual control - ideal for focus pullers and still manageable for solo operators who need controlled focus transitions. An internal focus design keeps the front element from rotating or extending during focusing, which is crucial when using matte boxes, filters, or gimbals. Both the focus and iris rings feature industry‑standard 0.8 MOD gears, ready for follow focus units and FIZ systems in professional cinema setups.
